Rose water is said to have been first prepared in the 10th century by the Persian physician Ibn Sina. But the story begins earlier still in the plasters of ancient Greece, the eye lotions of Dioscorides, the fragrant oil that appeared on the surface of a rose-filled canal at the wedding of a Persian princess. Rosa damascena has been inseparable from beauty, healing, and love since the beginning of recorded botany.

Perhaps because of its seductive fragrance and the fact that it is literally the reproductive center of the flower, Saffron has been revered across every healing tradition for millennia - as sacred dye, temple offering, love tonics, and medicine of the heart.

In the Ayurvedic tradition, saffron is classified as a Varnya dravya - a botanical that enhances the luminosity of the skin from within. It is applied to the skin of both humans and temple deities, indicating the highest possible esteem. It is also said to balance all three doshas and purify the mind.

Ayurveda also loves Saffron as a Rasayana, a botanical used to nourish Ojas, the subtle essence of vitality. It deepens the connection to pleasure and intimacy, encourages deep restorative rest, and supports emotional steadiness.

TRADITIONAL ROOTS

Birthplace of Rose Water

Ibn Sina prepared the first rose water in the 10th century. Persian distilleries soon began producing the exquisite “otto of roses” as a perfume and medicine. Rose was sacred to the culture—used in wedding rituals, healing preparations, and as a symbol of divine beauty. Arabic traditions classified rose as warming, used to move the blood and open the heart.

THE HEART & LIVER FLOWER

In Ayurveda, rose balances all three doshas and is indicated for the reproductive and circulatory systems. In Chinese medicine, rose affects the Liver and Spleen channels harmonizing blood, moving qi, easing breast tenderness and menstrual pain. Both traditions value rose as an emotional restorative for grief, loss, and stagnant energy.

THE ANCIENT WOUND HEALER

Dioscorides recorded recipes for rose oil in the 1st century, noting its astringency and cooling nature. Rose was sacred to Aphrodite and Venus, goddesses of love. Culpeper and Parkinson prescribed dried roses for menstrual regulation. Hildegard von Bingen used rose leaf to clear the eyes. By the 18th century, Western texts defined rose as primarily useful for the heart and nervous system.

MENSTRUAL PAIN RELIEF

A clinical trial of 92 women with primary dysmenorrhea found that 200 mg ofRosa damascena extract taken every 6 hours had similar effects to mefenamic acid [a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug] in reducing menstrual pain, without the side effects of the conventional medication.

Clinical research on rose essential oil has demonstrated its effectiveness in easing labor pain and anxiety, alleviating premenstrual syndrome, and reducing migraine headaches. In a study evaluating herbs used in the Unani system of traditional medicine, Rosa damascena demonstrated significant potential for preventing oxidative DNA damage and radical scavenging activity. A separate randomized controlled trial found powdered rose hips successful in sustaining the youthfulness of the skin improving markers of wrinkles and elasticity.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study found that a mouthwash made from an aqueous extract ofRosa damascena was more effective than placebo in treating recurrent mouth lesions confirming the anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that healers have observed for millennia.
